INTRODUCTION ---------------- Thank you for your interest in TapSmart(TM) HandShare(TM). HandShare is the premier solution for remotely controlling your Palm OS based handheld from your PC. Trial Period ------------ HandShare is fully functional on a trial basis for 14 days from when you installed it. Give it a spin, We're sure you'll like what you see. After the trial period expires, you must purchase a registration code to continue to use HandShare. Where to purchase ----------------- If you wish to purchase a registration code, please visit www.mobilityware.com. II. TapSmart HandShare Quick Start ----------------------------------- This Quick Start procedure assumes a simple hardware configuration of a handheld device connected to a personal computer via a USB cable. By using USBLink on a remote personal computer across a network, or by using other communications technology on your handheld device such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, more sophisticated scenarios are possible. 1. Run Setup.exe and follow the on screen directions. 2. HotSync the handheld device that you selected to have the HandShare files installed to. 3. Locate the TapSmart HandShare program on your PC by going to the Start menu and selecting Programs and then selecting TapSmart HandShare. Run the TapSmart HandShare program from this menu. 4. In several seconds a generic image of a handheld device should appear on your screen. 5. Make sure that your handheld is in the cradle or has a HotSync cable attached. 6. Run the HandShare program on your handheld and tap the Activate button. 7. If HandShare is installed correctly and your handheld has a good USB connection to the PC you should see a trial screen that you can click OK on. If you are using a registered copy of HandShare you will not see the trial screen. 8. HandShare uses skins to provide a device specific look and feel. If HandShare cannot locate a skin for your device a message will be displayed asking if you want to download a skin for your device. If you click Yes the program will attempt to connect to the internet and download a skin from www.mobilityware.com. If you click No or no skin can be downloaded for your device a generic skin will be used that may not allow you to use the full capabilities of your device through HandShare. 9. You should now see a representation of your handheld on the PC monitor. You can now use your mouse to click on the image of the handheld device being displayed on the PC monitor. Left mouse button clicks on the display area of the device screen will be registered as screen taps on the actual handheld. Clicking with the left mouse button on the handheld device buttons within the image will activate those buttons as if they had been pressed on the actual device. To access the HandShare Remote Control component menu, click with the right mouse button anywhere on the image of the handheld device. III. PALM AND PC REQUIREMENTS ------------------------------ HandHeld Platform Requirements ------------------------------ The HandHeld component of HandShare is designed to work on any Palm OS 4 or OS 5 device. HandShare is known to work on the following handhelds: Aceeca MEZ1000 Kyocera 7135 Fossil FX2008 Palm m515 Palm Treo 600 Palm Treo 650 Palm Treo 680 Palm Treo 700P Palm Tungsten C Palm Tungsten E Palm Tungsten T Palm Tungsten T2 Palm Tungsten T3 Palm Tungsten T5 Palm TX Palm LifeDrive Palm Zire Palm Zire 21 Palm Zire 31 Palm Zire 71 Palm Zire 72 Palm Z22 Garmin iQue 3600 Garmin iQue 3200 Samsung SPH-i500 Samsung i539 Sony SJ22 Sony SJ30 Sony N760C Sony TJ25 Sony TJ37 Sony TH55 Sony UX50 Symbol 1800 Tapwave Zodiac NOTE: While the handheld component of HandShare is compatible for use on many Palm devices, it is only supported for use in a configuration that is supported by the device manufacturer. Consequently, some of the devices listed above may be supported for use with some Windows operating systems, but not others. To establish connectivity between the HandShare Handheld component and the HandShare Remote Control component, some type of physical network access to a TCP/IP network (e.g., Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, wireless data service, etc.) or a USB cradle/cable is required. Windows Platforms Requirements ------------------------------ The Remote Control component of HandShare requires a personal computing device running Windows 98 or later. The Remote Control component also requires the installation of the Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1 or later. You can determine if you have the correct version of software installed by going to Add/Remove Programs in Windows and looking for “Microsoft .NET Framework”. If you need to install or update Microsoft .NET Framework, perform a Windows Update by going to the start menu and selecting “Windows Update”. If you wish to download the Microsoft .NET Framework directly, go to Microsoft .NET Framework Redistributable Package page at www.microsoft.com. Support for Windows Vista --------------------------------------- TapSmart HandShare has been qualified and is supported for use on the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system in conjunction with the recently released Palm Desktop 6.2 Beta for Windows. The 6.2 Beta version (or later) of Palm Desktop for Windows MUST be installed for HandShare to function properly on Windows Vista. IV. LIMITATIONS, TAP AND HOLD FEATURE -------------------------------------- Limitations ----------- - The Tap and Hold feature does not work on all devices. - Tapping the status bar on Sony 480x320 or 320x480 devices is not supported. - Navigating via custom scroll bars is not supported. - Scroll Bar on Palm OS 4 devices is not supported. - Audio is not supported. - Video applications may not perform at full speed. Due to performance limitations related to screen updates, the HandShare product may not be appropriate for certain types of applications. In particular, less than satisfactory performance may be experienced when using HandShare with some games. Tap and Hold Feature -------------------- The Tap and Hold feature allows the mouse to completely simulate the handheld's stylus. Holding the left mouse button down within the handheld's screen as displayed by HandShare is the same as holding the stylus down on the actual handheld screen. Moving the mouse while holding down the left mouse button is the same as holding the stylus down on the actual handheld screen and moving it. The Tap and Hold feature is turned off by default as it may not work correctly with all devices or programs. To turn on the Tap and Hold feature click on the Preferences button in the HandShare program on the handheld and then check the Tap and Hold option on the Preferences screen. The Tap and Hold feature has the following limitations: - Only supported on handhelds running Palm OS 5. - Only supported when using a USB connection. - Not supported on any Sony Clie that has a 320x480 or 480x320 screen. - Not supported on the original Tungsten T. - Not supported on the Zire 21 - May interfere with some audio player programs. V. KNOWN PROBLEMS, CHANGE HISTORY AND FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ----------------------------------------------------------------- Known Problems -------------- The "USB Quick Send" option can speed up USB communications on some devices, however some devices may not be compatible with USB Quick Send. If you are having USB problems when running HandShare, then uncheck this option. This option is only available on OS 5 devices. The "No Alarms" option causes HandShare to alter the way that it runs in the background. Normally HandShare uses the Palm Alarm feature to help with background processing, there are a small number of programs that may have compatibililty problems with HandShare's use of alarms. If you are having problems running a program when HandShare is active then you should try checking the "No Alarms" option. The "No Alarms" option will take effect the next time you activate HandShare. Tapwave Zodiac Limitations: Portrait mode is not supported. Left handed operation in landscape is not supported. I haven't received my registration code for TapSmart HandShare yet. What do I do? Occasionally registration emails can get lost, or rejected by mail filters. Please send an email to support@mobilityware.com and include the relevant information, including the HotSync ID used. 2. I get the error message "The dynamic link library mscoree.dll could not be found" when trying to run HandShare. What is wrong? You need to install version 1.1 of the Microsoft .NET Framework. 3. Where can I find version 1.1 of the .NET Framework? You can download version 1.1 of the .NET Framework by following this link: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com or by searching for .NET Framework version 1.1 on the Microsoft website. 4. The SkinManager gives me the following error: "Skins are not available for the following Device IDs:" What does this mean? Skins are not currently available for all devices. Each device has a device id associated with it, we use this device id to locate an available skin for your device. We add new skins when we get images of the device that can be turned into a skin. If a skin is not available for your specific device send an email to support@mobilityware.com and let us know that you would like to see one. 5. My Sony Clie will not work over USB. How can I get it to work? Not all Sony Clie devices can be automatically identified by USBLink. This is a shortcoming in the Sony Clie device. If your Sony Clie does not work using USBLink, try this workaround. Create or edit the file called USBLink.ini in the HandShare installation directory. Make sure USBLink.ini contains a [USB] section as follows: [USB] Sony=1 6. I get the error message "c:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\mscorwks.dll could not be loaded" when trying to run HandShare. What is wrong? You have version 1.0 of the .NET Framework installed. You need to install version 1.1 of the Microsoft .NET Framework. VI.
